When we met her, we were extremely impressed how a 14 year old, living in a traditional Sidama hut, was able to speak English and look calmly at us in the eyes, with a smile. I asked about her school situation and she said she dreamed of attending Union Academy in Hawassa. A year later, and a lot of organization (and money) and we got her there. She’s currently living in a room we’re renting for her in Hawassa with her older brother Ashenaf, who cooks for her and helps with homework, but we have committed to something that has become much bigger than just getting a girl into a good school…
